Chocolatetown Chip Cookies

While I am normally a Tollhouse chocolate chip back-of-the-bag recipe kind of girl, sometimes I like to switch things up.  Chocolate Chip cookies are one of my absolute favorite desserts, and really, there isn’t a whole lot you can do to mess them up.

I found this recipe in a Hershey recipe book that I got at a garage sale (I love garage sales!)


and thought I’d give it a shot.  I couldn’t find the recipe anywhere on the Internet (I know, I was surprised too!) so here it is:

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

I didn’t use the Hershey’s chips as they suggested, since I already had Tollhouse chips on hand.

Tollhouse Chips

Yes, I do normally keep a Costco sized bag of chocolate chips in my house.  Its the only way to go.

Heat oven to 375°

Mix together butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar and vanilla until fluffy.

Add eggs and beat well.

In a separate bowl stir together flour, baking soda and salt.

Gradually add dry mixture to butter mixture.  Stir in chocolate chips.

Drop onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.

Or, of you live at my house – take directly off the cookie sheet and try not to burn your mouth as you are eating them.  We don’t do well with “wait until cool”



Ease: A, really easy.  That is one thing that I love about chocolate chip cookies.  The majority of recipes are so easy, and they almost never turn out wrong.  Even if they don’t look perfect, they almost always still taste good!
Taste: A, these are solid chocolate chip cookies.  I’m pretty easy to please in the chocolate chip cookie world though, as long as they are soft, gooey and chocolatey, I don’t have much to complain about.

Would I make them again? Absolutely.  In fact, I already have!  The second time, I made them with peppermint extract instead of vanilla extract.  It was a delicious choice.  Not super overpowering minty, just kind of like mint chocolate chip cookies.

Now I am off to enjoy my extra hour of daylight savings time!  Blogging, knitting, and cleaning are in the plans.

  2. I definitely slept away my extra hour – and I’m totally okay with that :). Those chocolate chip cookies are amazing looking!!

  3. This is my family’s favorite recipe. I first got this recipe in the ’70s off a hershey’s chocolate chip bag. The only difference is that my recipe calls for either 1 cup shortening or 3/4 cup butter or margarine. My family prefers the cookies with shortening. Try them that way, you’ll love them.

  4. I used them in the 50’s and 60’s. Much betteer than Toll house as stay in a humped up area instead of spreading ant too much oily look and this oly edges. Hershey does not have this recipe where they can find it any more. Interesting isn’t it when it is so good and a keeper from way back. Is it in the 1934 recipe book you have Did I understand that right. Should tell Hershey.
