Restaurant Review: Orange

**Unfortunately as of Spring 2013, this restaurant is now closed**

Full Disclosure:  I paid for this meal with my own money and I was in no way reimbursed for this blog post.  The opinions are completely my own.

Before I went to Chicago, I sent out a Tweet asking for recommendations for places to eat.  I got TONS of delicious sounding restaurants.  Unfortunately I didn’t have time to try every single one, but  I did get to try this one!  Thank you Tara for suggesting it!!

Orange was a short walk from the hotel where we were staying.  (We went to the 738 N Clark St location.)  There is a bright orange sign and orange curtains, but it is easy to miss when you are walking on the other side of the road.

Orange Sign

It was pretty crowded when we got there  (It was about 11:30 on a Saturday) but luckily I think we ended up waiting less than 30 minutes for a table.  The actual restaurant is pretty small, so there is no surprise that there was a wait to get in.

So, why was I so excited to go here? Two things: Pancake Flights and Frushi.  Yes those things are exactly what they sound like.

One of the things that they are known for is called a “pancake flight” which is four stacks of different kinds of pancakes.  The flavors change each week, and this is what they were when we were there:

Pancake Flight

Yes, those are Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavors.  Luckily, my husband will eat much more exotic things than I will, so  I convinced him to try these decadent pancakes.

Pancakes

He said they were good, but definitely decadent!  I had a couple of bites and I would definitely agree.  The pancake that I tried tasted just like marshmallow!

And then there is the frushi.  Fruit + Sushi = Frushi.

Frushi

OMG.  This totally lived up to my expectations.  The photo is of two servings (2 pieces of each).  The piece in the foreground next to the strawberry is kind of like sticky rice with a slice of apple and a grape.  The piece in the background is more like sushi rice with some dices strawberry.  It was all really delicious.  I could have eaten about 15 more pieces.

Everything that they make comes beautifully presented too!  For my actual meal,  I got scrambled egg whites with breakfast potatoes and toast.

Eggs

This was good!  Honestly though, it was not as delicious as the frushi.  But definitely good, and a unique way to serve scrambled eggs and toast!

They did have some sandwiches and more lunch type foods as well as TONS of other breakfast options.  Sweet and savory.

Taste: A, the Frushi and uniqueness in general is definitely an A+, my main meal just was a little lackluster.
Cost: A-, it was a little pricey, but really not too bad for a unique chicago restaurant.

Would I go there again? Absolutely.  If there was one in Madison I think  I would go there every weekend.  Or maybe even every morning just for Frushi….
