101 in 1001 : #45 : Try Wearing Contact Lenses Again

It all started about two years ago. I was in the midst of wedding planning, things were going well, and I had just found my dress! So then came the question of what my wedding day accessories would be.  I have worn glasses since about middle school, but my prescription was never very strong, so I could basically take them off whenever I wanted.  Recently my vision got a bit worse.  Not horrible, but bad enough that things that are far away are definitely blurry if I am not wearing glasses.

For some reason I didn’t want to wear my glasses on my wedding day.  Its not that I don’t like how I look in glasses.  Maybe I wanted to show off my beautiful make up?  Who knows.  Since my vision had gotten worse and I didn’t want to make a fool of myself by tripping or something while walking down the aisle, I had it set in my mind that I wanted to wear contacts.  (It would be nice to se the smiling faces of our guests too. 🙂 )

Side note: I also got my ears pierced less than a year before my wedding.  Clearly I had something set in my mind about how I wanted to look.

I went to the eye doctor.  He gave me some tips about wearing contacts and gave me some contacts to try and come back in a few days.  I wore the contacts the rest of that day with basically no problems.  They did feel kind of weird, but I had never worn contacts before, so who knows how they were supposed to feel.

Over the next few days I wore them for a few hours at a time. Other than the weird feeling, I had no problems, or at least no problems that I didn’t think came with wearing contacts. I went back to the doctor a few days later and got a prescription for contact lenses.

But my eyes did not like them.  My eyes felt very dry, and almost painful at times when I wore them.  However, I was determined to wear them on my wedding day, so I stuck with it and wore them as much as I could bear – hoping that my eyes would get used to them.

But pretty much not at all after that.  On occasion I would try them again, usually with the same results after only a couple hours of wear.

This year I made it my goal to try contacts again.  I really do want to at least have the option to wear contacts when I feel like it.  Contacts that don’t hurt my eyes.  I went to the eye doctor again (different clinic this time) and again asked them for a prescription for contacts.  This time they prescribed me contacts that were just one time use, so I would put in new ones every day.

Last week, I tried these new contacts.  They seemed better from the start. Thankfully, over a week later they are still working well for me.

Success!

Side note:  I generally don’t wear any makeup, and while wearing glasses I didn’t really notice or care.  Wearing contacts,  I’ve found that I notice my makeup-less face a lot more.  By I that I mean, its clear to me that I am not wearing makeup.  With glasses it was more like “maybe she is, maybe she isn’t.  Who knows because its behind the glasses.”  Hmm.  Maybe its time to give makeup another try?  Or (the more likely option) still not really care and maybe throw on mascara once or twice a week.

  1. I’ve worn contacts since I was about 12 years old. I definitely have a lot of days when my eyes feel dry and irritated, but I’m just not willing to wear glasses all the time. and it’s weird, because I don’t hate how I look in glasses… I just like how I look without them better, I guess. Also, the pair of glasses I have right now have plastic frames which have gotten bent and so now they fall off my face all’a time. 🙁

  2. Sounds like a trip to Sephora is in order! Have I ever mentioned how jealous I am that you don’t have to drive 3 hours to go to Sephora? Really. Jealous.
