Restaurant Review: Barney’s Beanery

Full Disclosure:  I paid for this meal with my own money and I was in no way reimbursed for this blog post.  The opinions are completely my own.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the area of the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.  In that area there is a lot to do, eat and see.  Not to mention convenient parking ramps. On this particular day, I had been walking around so long that I knew I needed lunch, but didn’t really know what to choose.  I stopped to talk to one of the information people on the promenade and ask for some suggestions.  He suggested a few places to me including Barney’s Beanery – which was just down the road.

Upon entering, it reminded me a lot of a Hard Rock Cafe mixed with a TGI Friday’s.

There are TV’s everywhere.  They had a variety of sports events and news on the televisions, definitely something for everyone.

The menu is ridiculously huge.  They serve breakfast all day, and have everything from burgers to chili to tacos to sandwiches.  I decided on a simple grilled chicken sandwich with a baked potato.

The sandwich was quite disappointing.  The bun was nothing special – it was similar to a generic hamburger bun bought at a grocery store.  The chicken sandwich and potato as a whole were fine, but not great.  The service was not great either. I don’t mind a relaxed sports bar kind of atmosphere, but the waiter (and the waitress who took over for him while he went on break) just seemed like they didn’t really care.

Taste: B-, I ate it but it wasn’t great by any means.
Cost: C, the food was definitely not cheap, and especially since the service and food was not good, it was definitely not worth it.

Would I go there again? I don’t think so.  If you wanted to go to a sports bar to watch a game, this might be a good place to go.  Just don’t count on good food.

  1. When I was in LA in 2008, I went to Barney’s Beanery and was not impressed. My friend I was visiting was in love with the place, and I just sat there thinking, “This food is not good. Why are we here?” haha

    • That’s totally what I was thinking! I read lots of great reviews and was excited about the place, but the food was not good!
