Iron Cupcake Madison: Children’s Books

Yesterday there was another Iron Cupcake event in Madison.  Of course I went.  In case you weren’t sure of my love of cupcakes, check out my cupcake post from my trip to California. (There is also a post about cupcakes in Chicago coming as well.)  The last Iron Cupcake Madison event that I attended back in March was at the High Noon Saloon and the theme was Marshmallow.  (my blog post is about it is here.)  The theme, location, and charity changes with every challenge.  This time the theme was Children’s Books and the charity was (appropriately) the Literacy Network.  The event was held at Basie’s Restaurant.  The event cost $7 for 13 little cupcakes.

Last time, I arrived right at the time it was beginning (maybe a minute or two before) and there was only a couple of people ahead of me in line to get in.  This time, I arrived about 5 minutes after it started and there was a HUGE line.  More than a few dozen people.  I was definitely not expecting to have to wait, but I was already there so I waited.  The line moved pretty quickly and I was in picking out my cupcakes in less than 15 minutes.

This time they had more than 13 bakers so I actually had to choose the few that to bypass.  🙁   Each baker was judged on taste and their display.  I was pretty impressed with the variety of cupcakes compared to last time.  Although, I suppose that makes sense since the theme this time was a concept rather than an ingredient.

Here are a few of the different cupcakes:

Butterbeer Cupcake

Butterbeer cupcakes – based on the Harry Potter series of course.

Cloudy With A Chance Cupcake

White Cupcakes with a Strawberry Cream Cheese Filling – it is kind of hard to tell in the photo, but they were frosted to resemble various food items from the book Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.

Banana Cupcake

Chocolate Banana Cupcakes with Cream Cheese frosting inspired by the Curious George books.

It was a LOT more crowded this time so it was harder to get photos of everything, but there were lots of cute displays and nicely decorated cupcakes! Here is what my stash looked like at the end:

Cupcake Stash

I don’t know that there were very many that were similar in flavor, they were all pretty different  – definitely a larger variety than the last challenge.   Some of my favorites were Apple Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting, Vanilla Pound Cake filled with homemade berry jam and topped with fresh whipped cream and a berry, and the Butterbeer cupcakes were pretty good as well. There were even a couple gluten free cupcakes, and one vegan cupcake this time!

If you are in the Madison area, I would definitely suggest coming to this in the future!  But remember to get there early since it seems to be getting more popular with every event! It was a fun event and I can’t wait until they announce the next one!
