Small Changes Recap [and a video!]

This post is part of a series of posts that I am doing to bring awareness to reducing waste and sending less to the landfill. Although I am being compensated for this project, it in no way effects my thoughts or opinions.

A few weeks ago I shared with you a few small changes that could be made to help the environment from day to day.  I promised you I would update you on how I did with these at the end of the month, so here you go.

1) Be more aware of the packaging of products that I buy. I’d say I’m doing a good job at this.  The only thing that I still feel like is a bit of a waste is when I buy granola bars, but aside from making my own I’m not sure there is any way to get around that.

2) Buy less. Aside from groceries, I have only bought a shirt and a pair of boots…and a few other things. But nothing that won’t get used or gifted.

3) Use a re-usable coffee cup.  Alright, I definitely failed at this one.    I just can’t ever remember to bring my mug in with me!  And I’m still not sure about the drive-through situation.  FAIL.

4) Clean out dirty jars.  I am definitely doing better at this than I was before.  However, the next step will be to make sure the jars are cleaned out in a timely manner, rather than having them sit in my sink for a week waiting to be cleaned out.

5) Re-use gift boxes, bags, bows and ribbons.  This is one I am great at.  And it totally has nothing to do with the fact that my craft room is border-line hoarding. Definitely not.  I should have plenty of shipping and packaging materials for all of the gifts I give through the rest of the year.

6) Use a lunch bag and reusable containers when packing a lunch to bring to work/school instead of baggies or packaging that will be thrown away.  I’m doing well with this one.  I always have re-usable bags and containers around, the baggies are the only thing that I sometimes get caught with.  I think it is time to purchase some reusables.

7) Avoid buying single serving or individually wrapped products. I guess this goes along with paying attention to packaging.  However, aside from granola bars, I’d say that I’m doing pretty well with everything else.

8 ) Unsubscribe from junk mail and catalogs that you don’t use! I went through a while back and unsubscribed to a LOT of random junk that I was getting.  I still have a few that I need to unsubscribe to though.

9) Use re-usable bags shopping whenever possible.  I’m a pro at this one too!  I’ve found a super cute bag that fits right in my purse AND is large enough to hold a fair amount of things.

10) Give things away to those who will use them instead of throwing them away.  I have a couple of bags of things that are ready to be taken to Goodwill, and I have a few piles of things that are going to other friends as well.  That being said, there are definitely more things that I need to to get rid of some more clutter as well.

Last, but not least, a video! Just a little fun artsy video I put together from the view of the garbage can at my One Bag Event.  This, of course, does not show every single thing that went into the garbage throughout the night…..but  I don’t think you’d want to watch hours of video 🙂 Enjoy!

How was YOUR month?  I can’t believe it is almost OCTOBER already! Although, I am loving this fall-like weather.

  1. Keep up the good work Kelly. Love the video! I am glad no doggies were harmed in making the video 😛
I like the garbage can. Very snazzy. That could be my first baby step in starting to recycle.
