Full Disclosure: I received a this hummus for free through the Foodbuzz Tastemakers Program. Even though they paid for it, these are completely my own opinions.
A few months ago, I decided to put my food processor to the test and try my hand at making hummus. This was also the first time I’d ever eaten hummus. While I enjoyed this hummus, it was hard for me to get past my extreme dislike for chick peas. The strong garlic flavor did a good job at masking the beany taste, but the texture was still there.
A few weeks ago Sabra offered to send me a coupon to try some of their hummus through the Foodbuzz Tastemaker’s program. At first I wasn’t sure if I should accept the offer or not, since I’m not a huge hummus fan like I know many others are, but this blog is all about me trying new things, so I thought I’d go for it. Even if I didn’t love it, the husband does enjoy hummus, so it would get eaten by someone no matter what.
When I went to the store with my coupon to pick out which hummus to try, I was amazed at how many different varieties they had! (Obviously this isn’t a part of the grocery store that I usually spend time in.) I went with the Roasted Garlic Hummus, although there were others that sounded pretty good as well.
So I tried it. I brought some to work and tried it with veggies. I tried dipping delicious Naan in it.
I just don’t think I like hummus. The flavor was very garlicky – which was a definite plus – but it still had that beany background flavor and texture. I will definitely keep trying it though! I actually think I enjoyed it more on veggies than on bread, I think the crunchy texture of the veggies offsets the beany texture of the hummus a little bit more than the bread.
Taste: B-, I don’t know, maybe hummus just isn’t my thing. I’m not sure I can get over the beans.
Cost: B+, it seemed a little pricey, but I obviously don’t usually buy hummus so I’m not totally sure. Although, even though I thought it was a little high priced, there are quite a few servings per container, so it may not be as high priced as it seems.
Would I buy it again? Hmmmmmm probably not. Although, they do make a basil pesto hummus that I am still intrigued by.

I am so glad I am not the only foodie that doesn’t like hummus. 😀 The snack seems so popular but I don’t like the taste, period. I have had homemade, store bought, garlic, eggplant, red pepper, etc but still can not enjoy. Give me cheese spread anyday! LOL!

Glad to know I’m not alone! 🙂
Sometimes when I make my own hummus it’s got too much bean texture. I REALLY like this Fountain of Health brand hummus… it’s REALLY smooth and less acidic and I love the flavor. It’s on the cheaper side, too. If you feel like trying again, I reccomend them!
Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out!
I went through a phase where I couldn’t look at hummus without wanting to puke. I spent 2 weeks in Israel and since I don’t eat a lot of meat I was stuck eating so.much.hummus. It seriously took like a year to get over. But now I’m back to liking it again – though I really prefer the flavored types to plain.
No worries. I eat enough hummus for the both of us. 😉
And this is why we are friends 🙂
I like hummus, but I like your honesty even more! Thanks for trying new things and being honest with your readers that you don’t like everything–even if it’s free.
You can make hummus-like bean spreads with other beans too, if you don’t like chickpeas. I’m a big fan of white bean (cannellini) dip.
You are so sweet Emily! 🙂
Tell me more about these hummus-like bean spreads that don’t use chickpeas. Although I’m really not a fan of beans as a whole, chickpeas are the worst, so maybe I would like others more. Where can I find these other bean dip recipes?
I haven’t made most of these, but I have them because I want to make them someday (possibly soon because now you’ve got me thinking about it):

THANK YOU!! There has to be something in there that I will like. I hope. 🙂
I’m very new to eating hummus. For the longest time I didn’t think I’d like it, but now I’m a fan! There are certain flavors I enjoy more than others, that’s for sure! The Sabra brand isn’t bad at all though!
I am so picky about hummus. I find it’s generally taste-less and gritty when you buy it in the store. And I don’t really like the flavored store bought hummus packs because they just taste too strong.
Restaurant hummus that is smooth, rich and creamy is to die for. I could literally eat it every meal of the day.
However, my favorite store bought hummus (and typically the only one I’ll buy) is actually a white bean hummus and it really reminds me of the creamy restaurant kinds! I just found the white bean hummus at target actually (usually I buy it at my local natural foods store). If you are looking for a delicious hummus – check it out! It tastes much different than traditional hummus.
That is interesting that you say that restaurant hummus is really different. I really only considered eating hummus because the Husband had it randomly at a restaurant once and was raving about it! Every time I have him try the kinds that I try (the home made and the Sabra) he doesn’t love it as much as the restaurant variety!
You are the second person to recommend that I try a white bean variety. I’ll look for that the next time I am at Target, thanks!
restaurant hummus is like velvet!
