Restaurant Review: Mel’s Drive-In

Full Disclosure:  I paid for this meal with my own money and I was in no way reimbursed for this blog post.  The opinions are completely my own.

I have this weird thing about eating breakfast foods in the morning.  Some people can wake up at 11 and go straight to lunch foods like salads, sandwiches, burgers, etc.  I am not one of those people.  For whatever reason, I need to have breakfast food before anything else – something like eggs, a bagel, pancakes, waffles, etc.  This sometimes is hard for me while on vacation. Not only am I more likely to sleep in later and be lazier about getting up while on vacation, but also, getting food generally takes more work than walking out to the kitchen and opening the refrigerator.  Of course, sometimes this just doesn’t work out and I end up eating lunch foods, but I generally try pretty hard to find somewhere that serves breakfast all day….I’ll even settle for a coffee ship if it comes to it.

This time, we found Mel’s Drive-In.  Mel’s has a pretty famous history – most notedly for appearing in American Graffiti.  It also happens to be right off of Hollywood Boulevard, and just a short walk from our hotel.

For my breakfast/lunch I had 2 eggs (scrambled), grilled potatoes, and toast.

It was good!  It was definitely diner-style food, but definitely not as greasy as it could have been.  The only thing that I slightly disliked about it was that the potatoes were a bit burned, but nothing too badly that I couldn’t eat..

The husband (and everyone else we were with) had lunch foods, since it was lunch time after all.  He got a burger and fries (and I obviously didn’t catch it before he started eating, whoops.).  He said it was pretty good, but not awesome.

Overall the meal was good, and it was fun to eat in a famous place that has been filmed in movies!

Side Note: Mel’s is in the new Muppet Movie too!!  Have you seen it yet?  We just went to see it last weekend, I loved it!  It was a good mix of  funny and drama with lots of Muppet standard scenes as well.  And TONS of celebrity cameos, which I’m a big fan of.

Taste: A-, pretty solid diner-style food.
Cost: A, definitely reasonable for how high priced food in California can be.

Would I go there again? Yeah, I think so.  The location is convenient, and the food is good, and they have a good variety.

  1. Oh girllll! I hear ya on the needing “breakfast” food when I wake up. It doesn’t help/hurt that eggs are one of my favorite foods either.

    • Yeah I feel the same way about bagels – although eggs are up there too. This causes a problem with the husband sometimes because he definitely is more of a fan of lunch/dinner foods than breakfast foods.
