101 in 1001: Read 5 Books #4

One time, I basically declared herself a non-reader.  Every time that I explained to someone that my goal was to read 5 books in 1001 days, I told this to them as they looked at  like either a crazy person or a 6 year old.  5 books seemed like a HUGE challenge to me, since I really tend to read maybe one book a year,  and I seemed to be right on track with the time I expected to would take me to read a book when it took me almost 5 months to finish the first book on my list.  There were months at a time where I pretty much wouldn’t read at all, or would start a book and not finish it.  Then I got my hands on Mindy Kaling’s book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) I actually have had it since Christmas, but decided to tackle the Steve Jobs Biography first instead.  I will admit that I definitely questioned my choice a few times but knew that I needed to finish one book before I started another or I would never go back to the first one.  So, last week when I finished the first book I almost immediately started reading this book.

Mindy Kaling Book

I will admit, I did not expect this book to be any kind of hard, painfully slow read going in – but I did NOT anticipate finishing it so quickly!   This book only took me about a week to read which is super fast for me.  There were several reasons why I think I enojyed this book so much and finished it so quickly:

– It is not a long book to start with.  At about 1/3 of the size of the last book  I read it was definitely not intimidating which is probably why I started reading it right away.  Sometimes when I finish reading a long book and then go look at the rest of the stack of books I have to read, I almost don’t want to commit the time to starting another one!

– Not only was the book as a whole fairly short but each chapter in the book was almost its own entity.  It was like a collection of short stories on different topics  – which I loved! Mindy’s writing style is very conversational and an easy read.  Although each chapter is kind of its own story, it still flows together as you are having a conversation.  One of the things that I enjoy most about books with short-story-like chapters is that I feel a sense of accomplishment when I finish each chapter. Weird?  Probably. But I’ll tell you again that I am not an avid reader, and maybe it will make more sense that my brain sometimes has to be bribed, even in the simplest way, to read.

– After recently finishing and loving TIna Fey’s book I had high hopes for this one.  Tina and Mindy are both female comedy writer/actress/producers whom I love, and whose shows I watch, so I assumed the books would be similar.  Although they are similar in the fact that they are both funny books, this book is much more just musings from Mindy’s life rather than the more autobiographical approach that Tina takes. Mindy does talk about parts of her life – but she also talks about random other things that are just as interesting. Here titles of a few of my favorite chapters: (no spoilers, don’t worry!)

  • The Exact Level of Fame I Want
  • My Favorite 11 Moments in Comedy
  • When You’re Not Skinny, This is What People Want You To Wear

There is also a part in the book, although not a whole chapter, where she distinguishes herself from Kelly Kapoor (her character on The Office) by listing things that one would do that the other would not.  It is hilarious….but maybe that is because I can relate with multiple things on each list.

In short: Go read this book, it will brighten your day.
