Full Disclosure: I paid for this meal with my own money (er, my parent’s paid for it) the opinions are completely my own and I am not being compensated for this post.
It is always hard for me to decide where to go to dinner for my birthday. Do I choose somewhere that I know and love? Do I choose somewhere new? What if I just feel like having a bagel, should I force myself to go out just because it is my birthday? Decisions, decisions! At first I really didn’t want to go anywhere big and fancy. I was pretty tired from working all day the day before, and we had just gone to get our Christmas tree earlier in the day. But since it was my birthday, and things are pretty busy right now with work, I decided that I should take advantage of it and go out somewhere for dinner.
My parents live on the opposite side of town than we do so since they were taking us out to dinner, I decided to choose somewhere on the other side of town since we wouldn’t normally make such a long trip just for dinner. I knew that Sarah had been to Buck and Honey’s a few times before and had nothing but rave reviews so I thought we should give it a try.
The menu was quite a bit larger than I expected! I didn’t look at the menu ahead of time (totally unlike me) and I was pleasantly surprised with all of the things on the menu that looked good to me. We decided to start with an appetizer. There were actually a few that we had to choose between (Sassy Cow Cheese Curds!) but we went with the Dynamo Nachos: crispy homemade corn chips served with guacamole, salsa, and sour cream. The chips were very good, and the cheese on them was a bit different than typical nachos. In between that gooey liquid cheese and melted cheese.
I also started my meal with a glass of wine (14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon) which didn’t get photographed. Incidentally, this is the first (and only) wine that I can tell you by name that I like. There are a few that I can look at the bottle and tell you that I’ve had before, but I’m pretty impressed with myself that I now have a wine that I can order and know I like!
For my entree I had the Scallops and Berries salad: Seared Scallops, Red and Black berries, Candied Walnuts, Blue Cheese Crumbles, Spinach and Spring Mix lettuce tossed with a Raspberry Vinaigrette dressing. It was delicious. Scallops are one of my favorite foods, and I’ve been into mixing fruit into salads recently so that was a perfect choice.
The husband had the Half Rack of Ribs with Macaroni and Cheese and Hash Browns, my mom had the Steak Gorgonzola Pasta, and my dad had the Fish Tacos with Sweet Potato Fries. Everyone was very pleased with their meals.
When the waiter told me that I get a free brownie for dessert since it was my birthday I accepted the offer without hesitation. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a brownie that I don’t like. This brownie was definitely not the exception. It was delicious. The four of us shared the dessert, but I easily could have eaten the whole thing by myself. It came with a small dollop of ice cream which was just enough the keep it from being overly sweet. Gooey, rich, delicious, brownie. …now I want another one after writing about it…
Overall the meal was great. The restaurant itself was very cute as well, a bit like a bar, but not too crazy (although there wasn’t a football game going on at the time) and the staff were all wonderful. I definitely recommend it if you are looking for somewhere to eat in Sun Prairie, I was there was one closer to our side of town!
Taste: A+, really delicious and unique.
Cost: A, my salad was $14 which I don’t feel like is bad at all for a decent sized entree.
Would I go there again? Absolutely. I don’t know that I would drive all the way across the city to go there, but I would definitely go if I was in the area.
