Yoga In The Mall

You know the popular quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Well, I did just that last week.

You see, I was invited to a free yoga class happening at the local Athleta store, which I mentioned in a previous post.  Now, it isn’t the yoga that scares me.  I actually quite enjoy yoga, which is why I agreed to attend the class.  I don’t, however, enjoy doing awkward and uncomfortable things in front of many strangers in a public place.  When I heard about the class, I guess I just assumed it was going to be held in the Athleta store.  (No, I had no idea how it would work out to have a group of people working out in a store while people were shopping, but ya know, I just figured they had something figured out.)

So, yeah, the yoga class…was in the mall.  In the center area of the mall. Where every single person was walking by wondering what the heck was going in. It was kind of like a yoga class flash mob.

Not exactly the serene, candle filled, calming yoga class that most of us are used to.  Luckily though, the class was so good that there wasn’t really time to think about the fact that you were sticking your butt in the air with a bunch of people watching you. The class was taught by a wonderful local yoga instructor, and put on by Jamie of Sweat Guru fame!  The class was difficult, but not too much that I felt like I couldn’t keep up.  There were only a couple of points where I retreated to child’s pose because there was no way I was going to make it into whatever pose they were attempting.  My arms were jelly by the end of the class and my knees were not happy with the hard floors (my knees are super sensitive so I usually use a blanket underneath them whenever my knees are on the ground for a pose) but other than that my body was pretty happy that it got stretched out and energized.

It also helped that two of my local blogger friends – Emily and Kim – were at the class as well! After the class, we headed back to the store for some tea and fruit and chat with Jamie.  We were all loving the cute clothes, too!  I’ve heard awesome things about Athleta but we just got the store in the past couple months, so I haven’t really had time to check it out.  There are definitely things that are being added to my wish list after checking them out last week.

Thanks Sweat Guru for the fun class!
