Restaurant Review: Bonfyre American Grille

Full Disclose: I paid for this meal with my own money.  I am not being compensated for this post, and the opinions are completely my own.

A couple of weeks ago for a birthday dinner, a group of us went to Bonfyre American Grille. We have tried to go here several times in the past and the wait is always over an hour long, so we always go somewhere else.  This time, we planned in advance and made reservations.

The menu has your standard steak and potatoes type meals, but it also has some more interesting and unique things like risotto, jambalaya, fish, and more.

To start, I had a glass of Malbec.  It was quite tasty.

I got a wedge salad – my favorite side salad.  As you can see from the photo below, I was a little bit hungry and started to eat my salad before I photographed it.  Oops.  The salad was pretty standard, and really it could’ve used a bit more dressing for my taste.

For my meal, I had the 6oz Filet Mignon which comes with a twice baked potato and green beans.  The steak was good, but not anything particularly amazing.  Green beans are not something that I particularly like, so they weren’t my favorite.   The twice baked potato was, well, more than just potato.  I was expecting just potato inside and some cheese on the top, but inside was also bacon and green onions mixed. Those are things I don’t particularly like – and wasn’t expecting – so I was a bit disappointed with the potato.

Since I was a little disappointed with my meal, I decided to order dessert in hopes it would turn the meal around.  I ordered the creme brulee to share with the husband.  It wasn’t bad, but nothing spectacular.  And I will say we were a bit sad when we saw the amount of fruit it was topped with.  The description made it seem like it would be more than just one lone raspberry.

Overall the meal wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as good as I was hoping for either.  Other people in the group really enjoyed their meals, so maybe it just it is just my taste in food.

Taste: B, not bad, but not great either.
Cost: B, not crazy expensive, but I’m not sure that the the price was worth the quality of the food either.

Would I go there again?  I’m not sure.  The meal wasn’t that bad, but with so many amazing restaurants in Madison, I don’t think I would choose this one again.

  1. great review! I really appreciate your honesty about all the places you go and things you try! 😀

  2. Is bonefyre a chain? i feel like i’ve heard of it before….either way, I completely understand being “underwhelmed” by a meal.

    • Nope, it isn’t a chain – but I do also feel like I’ve heard of restaurants with similar names before. Maybe it’s just a popular restaurant name? haha

  3. Hmmmmm . . . I’m confused. The salad looks very fresh (and honestly, a wedge salad is exactly what you called it: standard), the green beans look fresh as well as perfectly cooked, a twice-baked potato *always* has more than just potato inside it (otherwise it’s called a baked or loaded baked potato), it appears the steak was topped with a beautiful compound butter, and the crème brûlée looks perfectly caramelized, yet you state that you’re not sure if the *quality* made it all worth the price. Was this a $100 meal? Not liking something isn’t the same as food being of inadequate quality or being improperly cooked, and your photos don’t make it appear as if there were any real issues with the food’s quality at all. I’d hate to think that your review would keep anyone who loves a perfectly cooked green bean or a properly prepared twice-baked potato from eating at this restaurant.

    • We where there yesterday and I had the same thing she had. It was very yummy!!! We will be back often and we live an hour away. Well worth the drive.

  4. I totally understand what you mean by being underwhelmed by Bonfyre. The one time we made it everything looked fabulous but was incredibly under seasoned and bland. I’ve always hoped that the night we went was just an off night–so many of my friends have always raved about it–but after reading this, I’m not so sure…
